| Soil Amendments, Organic Mulches, and Potting Soil | ||
| A note on mulch: We carry no bark mulches at Sugarbush Nursery, and instead, encourage all of our customers to use compost as mulch. Why? Bark mulches do little for your soil or the plants in your garden - as they break down, they take nitrogen from your plants, and furthermore, they are the preferred harbor of artillery fungus, which shoots spores at your house, car, or whatever is nearby. Using compost (or shredded fall leaves) as mulch is highly preferable - compost is dark black and crumby, with an attractive appearance; it keeps down the weeds, retains moisture, and adds high-quality organic matter to your soil. If you need compost in larger quantities, we like the compost from Ridgewood Soils in Reading. | ||

| Weed Control | ||
| Corn gluten meal naturally prevents germination of seeds, and provides nitrogen to the soil as it breaks down. It can be used safely in gardens and in lawns to control annual weeds. For lawn care, corn gluten meal must be used twice a year, for two consecutive years, to achieve maximum effectiveness. If this schedule is followed, turfgrass will become strong enough to fill in the bare patches left by the weeds that have not germinated, and won't have the opportunity to take hold in the turf again. Application times are early spring, when the forsythia blooms, and again in the fall, when leaves color. | ||
